If you haven’t already visited the Museum of African American Art to view the exhibition, Shades of Greatness: Art Inspired by Negro Leagues Baseball, this weekend is your last chance. “The exhibit features 35 original works of art produced by 28 artists who interpret the Negro Leagues experience on and off the playing field.” This traveling exhibition comes from the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Missouri and will only be in Los Angeles until Sunday, July 7th. The Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Parks After Dark

34 LA County Parks are participating in the 2024 Season Parks After Dark program which takes place on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm, now through August 3rd. The fun includes a number of free activities including concerts, movies, sports clinics, and more. Each week brings a different theme. Check with your local park for details.

Anime Expo LA

Anime Expo LA is happening this weekend, beginning on Thursday, July 4th and continuing through Sunday, July 7th. Anime fans will find so much to see and do including a huge Exhibit Hall (over 340,000 square feet!) offering exclusive merchandise, collectibles, and cutting-edge electronics, an Artist Alley, a number of panel discussions, live musical performances, meet-and-greets, an Entertainment Hall featuring arcade machines, console gaming, and tabletop gaming, and more! Free First Fridays
Kidspace Children’s Museum

Families are invited to visit Kidspace Children’s Museum for free on Friday, July 5th from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The first Friday of each month, Kidspace opens it doors and gives families the chance to explore the museum with no admission fees. Advance reservations are required and are available online.

Concerts in the Park

The City of Alhambra begins its Concerts in the Park Series on Friday, July 5th. Each Friday (through August 2nd) from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm, families are invited to bring their blankets and chairs and dancing shoes “for a fantastic evening under the stars.” A different musical genre is highlighted each week. On the 5th, U2xPERIENCE (a U2 Tribute Band) is scheduled to perform.

Beach Movie Nights: Finding Nemo

“Enjoy free family-friendly movie screenings on the sand, by the waves, and under the stars at the Dockweiler Youth Center, Friday nights this summer.” On Friday, July 5th, Finding Nemo will be shown. Be sure to bring blankets to stay warm. Seating is first-come, first-served. The movie starts at 8:00 pm. RSVP online to be notified of any last-minute changes. (The movie is rated G.)

Movies On the Roof
Westfield Fashion Square

Westfield Fashion Square is hosting its weekly Movies On the Roof series throughout the summer. The outdoor “movie-screening experience includes comfortable seating on plush bean bag chairs or deep-seated Adirondack chairs,?state-of-the-art projection and sound, and valley views in an upscale event space on the rooftop of Westfield Fashion Square.” Doors open at 7:30 pm with music, games, and giveaways to enjoy before the movie starts at sunset (around 8:30 pm). On Friday, July 5th Independence Day (rated PG-13) will be screened, and on Saturday, July 6th Top Gun (rated PG) is scheduled. Tickets are available online. (Note – only Westfield Fashion Square eatery food is permitted.)

Aquarium of the Pacific Beach Cleanup

Families are invited to volunteer for the Aquarium of the Pacific Beach Cleanup event happening on Saturday, July 6th from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Free parking will be provided during the cleanup. Build and Explore – Harry Potter

Celebrate Harry Potter with a special brick-building event at Artesia Library on Saturday, July 6th from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Participants will “make fun sets lifted from the pages of the Harry Potter books.” The completed buildings will then be displayed in the library with the child’s name listed as the builder. Advance registration is required as attendance is limited. All materials will be provided.

Visit Hyde Park Miriam Matthews Branch Library on Saturday, July 6th from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm for a special hands-on presentation by Drones4Kids. Participants will learn “how to fly drones, using a remote control to maneuver drones through an obstacle course.” Recommended for children and teens, ages 8 and older.

Street Food Cinema: National Treasure (20th Anniversary)

NoHo Summer Nights: Locked Out of Heaven – The Freshest Bruno Mars Tribute

On Saturday, July 6th from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm enjoy an outdoor performance by Locked Out of Heaven – The Freshest Bruno Mars Tribute as part of the NoHo Summer Nights Concert series. “Step into a world where the magic of Bruno Mars comes alive like never before.” Described as an immersive experience, the band’s attention to detail means their “costumes, choreography, and instrumentation are a testament to their dedication to bringing Bruno Mars’ world-class live performances to your doorstep.” The performance also features Emerging Artist Funky 80’s Group. Movies in the Park: Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken

The City of Alhambra begins its Movies in the Park Series this weekend on Saturday, July 6th. Each Saturday (through August 3rd), families are invited to bring their blankets and chairs and movie snacks and settle in for “a reel good time.” Movies begin at dusk, but the pre-show entertainment begins at 7:00 pm. On the 6th, the featured movie is Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken. (The movie is rated PG.)

Wendy’s Peter Pan is a re-telling by Ellen Geer of the widely-known story by J.M. Barrie. “Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum has transformed its uniquely beautiful outdoor amphitheater into the imaginary isle of Neverland. Ellen Geer’s pondering frames the original script through the eyes of Wendy and her children, encouraging the next generation to never lose the innocence of belief in other worlds and other ways.” Performances are scheduled throughout the summer (through October 4th) on certain Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. This weekend there is a performance scheduled for Saturday, July 6th at 7:30 pm. (Note – Topanga Canyon Blvd. is currently closed between the theater and PCH. To access Theatricum from the Valley, exit the 101 at Topanga Canyon Blvd. South.) Tickets are available online.

Family Matinee: Raiders of the Lost Ark

As part of its Family Matinee program, New Beverly Cinema is screening Raiders of the Lost Ark on Saturday, July 6th and Sunday, July 7th. “Producer George Lucas, screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan, and director Steven Spielberg gift us with one of the greatest adventures to ever grace the big screen!” The always-popular film will be screened at 2:00 pm each day. The fun includes “ive entertainment and LAist talent, family-friendly activities, a dynamic range of Smorgasburg LA vendors, and, of course – cheeseburgers.” Plus, you’ll want to be there when the community-chosen cheeseburger champions are crowned! Southern California Live Steamers hosts Public Train Ride Day at Wilson Park on the first Sunday (11:00 am to 3:00 pm) and third Saturday (12:00 pm to 3:00 pm) of each month. This month, that means families can visit on Sunday, July 7th (and later in the month on July 20th). Learn about steam and diesel locomotives, and enjoy a ride on a miniature railroad. (Keep in mind – to ride the trains, children must be able to walk on their own and be at least 32” tall.)

Sega 90s, a band that is “dedicated to keeping the upbeat and irreverent spirit of the ‘90s alive,” will be performing. “Each performance features a setlist tailored specifically to the occasion, featuring only live instruments and zero backing tracks.” Remember to bring your blankets, lawn chairs, and picnics. The City of Agoura Hills presents a Summer Concert in the Park on Sunday, July 7th at 6:00 pm. Fantastic Diamond, featuring the music of Neil Diamond, will be performing. And, as a special bonus, a drone show will follow the concert. Food will be available for purchase on-site.

Shakespeare By the Sea: Henry IV: Falstaff & the Boy Who Would Be King

Shakespeare By the Sea presents free, outdoor performances in a number of locations throughout the “entire South Bay, Los Angeles, and parts of Orange Counties.” On Sunday, July 7th there is a 7:00 pm performance of Henry IV: Falstaff & the Boy Who Would Be King. The performance takes place on a large grassy field, perfect for your beach chairs. Also, be sure to bring blankets and layered clothing; the temperature cools down quite a bit during the performance.
